Remote Indicators are designed to be connected to detectors which are not normally accessible.  The purpose of the remote indicator is to indicate to the occupants of the building that an inaccessible detector on the fire alarm system has been activated.  Upon activation the LED indicator on the front of the Remote Indicator will illuminate to show that a particular detector has been activated.  Fire Alarm Remote Indicators are normally used with detectors in roof spaces, concealed voids or in lift shafts.

Most modern detector bases have a set of terminals with the specific purpose of connecting a remote indicator into.  The remote indicator unit is usually positioned in an easily viewable position at high level.
