Disabled Toilet Alarm Regulations
If you’re looking at building a new disabled wc for your premises, you’ll need to know the guidelines you have to follow in accordance with document M of the building regulations, BS 8300 and also the Disability Discrimination Act of 2005 along with the Equalities Act of 2010.
What is BS 8300 and how do I follow it? BS 8300-2:2018 is described as the Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. Buildings - code of practice. The earlier version was named BS 8300:2009 (+A1:2010). It requires that all disabled wc installations are fitted with an emergency assist alarm – it should sound and look different from a fire alarm, as to not be confused with one. The pull cord should be correct to these specifications:
“An emergency assistance pull cord, coloured red, should be provided with two red bangles of 50 mm diameter, one set at a height between 800 mm and 1 000 mm and the other set at 100 mm above finished floor level.”
An additional low level alarm activator or longer pull cord would benefit someone who has fallen on the floor, this is beneficial but not necessary.
An alarm indicator should be positioned somewhere that is easily seen and heard by people who can assist, so when the alarm is sounded, help can be received as soon as possible. Many companies also install a remote alarm indicator in a location that permanently has staff there.
The reset control should be clear and should be reachable by a wheelchair user. The emergency assist alarm should let the user know, both audibly and visually, that the alarm has been activated and help is on the way to comfort those in distress.
