Introduction to AFFF Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam fire extinguishers, known for their versatility and effectiveness, play a pivotal role in fire safety. These extinguishers use a foam-based extinguishing agent, typically aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), to combat fires, making them particularly suitable for Class A and B fires involving flammable liquids and solids. Understanding the properties and applications of foam fire extinguishers is essential for optimal fire protection in various settings.

What is a Foam Fire Extinguisher?

A foam fire extinguisher, often termed an AFFF foam extinguisher, dispenses a water-based solution mixed with foam concentrate. This combination produces a foam that can smother fires by creating a barrier on the surface of burning materials, effectively cutting off the oxygen supply and lowering the temperature to prevent re-ignition.

Key Features

  • Types and Sizes: Foam fire extinguishers are available in various sizes, making them suitable for different fire risks and environments. The Safety Centre stocks 2ltr all the way up to 100ltr extinguishers.
  • Class A and B Fires: These extinguishers are particularly effective against Class A fires (involving solid materials like wood and paper) and Class B fires (involving flammable liquids like petrol and spirits).
  • Safety and Standards: High-quality foam fire extinguishers undergo rigorous testing, including the 35kv conductivity test, ensuring they are safe to use and meet stringent safety standards.

Advantages of Foam Fire Extinguishers

Ideal for Class A and B Fire Situations

These extinguishers are used for fires in Class A and B. Whilst not recommended, they can also be used for electrical equipment fires if they pass the 35kv conductivity test. Their application technique differs based on the type of fire, ensuring effective and safe fire suppression.

Handling Flammable Liquid Fires - When dealing with fires involving flammable liquids, such as petrol or spirits, it's crucial to use the foam fire extinguisher correctly to prevent spreading the fire. Do not spray directly at the flames. If the liquid is contained, aim the extinguisher at the inside edge of the container. For uncontained liquid fires, use a gentle sweeping motion across the top of the fire. This technique allows the foam to settle over the burning liquid, smothering the fire effectively.

Tackling Flammable Solids Fires - For fires involving flammable solids, like paper or wood, aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire, moving it back and forth across the flames. This method helps to cover the burning material entirely with foam, cutting off the fire's oxygen supply and extinguishing it efficiently.

Use on Electrical Fires (Not Recommended) - Though foam fire extinguishers are not the recommended choice for electrical fires, they can be used if no other extinguisher type, like CO2 fire extinguishers, is available. In such cases, treat the fire as you would with paper or wood. Aim at the base of the fire, stand well back, maintaining a safe distance of at least 1 meter to minimise the risk of electric shocks. It's crucial to prioritise safety and use caution when dealing with electrical fires.

Effective Smothering Action

The foam produced by these extinguishers is excellent at smothering the fire, covering the top of the fire and creating a barrier that cuts off the oxygen supply. This action not only extinguishes the fire but also helps in preventing re-ignition.
